How to play Word Dextreme
Three timed rounds, a challenge to chase and upgrades with consequences: learn the sequence before the clock starts.
Dextreme keeps the 15-card, three-word puzzle from Word Decks, then puts it under pressure. You play three rounds, normally with 60 seconds for each word stage. The aim is to finish with the highest total after market spending—not simply to buy the most upgrades.
1. Read the challenge, then find three words
At the start of a round, check the DEXTREME challenge and your current multiplier. A challenge might ask for a six-letter word, two words of the same length, or a particular type of letter use. Its description tells you what counts.
Tap cards or type a word, then press Play word. Each word needs at least three letters. Your three words must be different within the round, and each physical card can be used once. Unused cards are allowed. You can undo a word or reset the round before locking it in.
For example, the teaching deck C A T D O G S U N H E L P R Y can make CAT, DOG and SUN using nine separate cards. You still have H, E, L, P, R and Y unused. This is a learning example, not today’s challenge.
2. Understand what the challenge changes
Dextreme’s cards have their own values: CAT is 4 + 3 + 3 = 10, DOG is 4 + 3 + 5 = 12, and SUN is 3 + 4 + 3 = 10 before upgrades or special effects. Do not use the original game’s card values to predict a Dextreme score.
A first-round challenge example
With SHORT SHARP SHOCK, at least one word must have exactly three letters. CAT, DOG and SUN satisfy that condition. With no upgrades or special cards, those words total 32; the challenge adds 50, and a first-round multiplier of ×1 gives 82 points.
Clearing it raises the multiplier for the next round to ×2. It does not retrospectively double the 82. Some challenges use card effects rather than a flat bonus: read the displayed challenge rather than assuming every success adds 50.
Submitting a valid three-word round without meeting the challenge still earns its word score at the current multiplier, but the next-round multiplier resets to ×1. A finishable set of words can be safer than chasing a condition until the timer runs out.
3. Bank the round before the clock ends
The finish button becomes available when you have three words. Lock them in to bank the round; the result screen explains the word score, challenge and multiplier. An unfinished timed-out round contributes no word score for that round and ends the game with the total accumulated so far.
4. Visit the letter market
After rounds 1 and 2, start the market from the round summary. Choose a market letter and the deck card to replace, then Stage Swap, or drag the market card onto a deck card. The first swap is free; further swaps add to your pending spend. Reset Changes restores staged purchases without restarting the market clock.
The base-price window lasts 45 seconds. Prices rise at 30-second intervals after that, as well as rising with the number of swaps. Check YOUR SCORE, SPEND and AFTER LOCK. Lock in Market commits the purchases and subtracts their cost from your total.
5. Pick a free permanent upgrade
After locking the letter market, choose one of the offered permanent upgrades and start the next round. The upgrade itself is free, but its effect can change which words or play order are valuable. FIRST BLOOD, for example, doubles the first word’s score; ILLEGAL OVERTIME adds 20 seconds to later word rounds.
Choose a benefit your deck can use. A plan depending on one exceptional word is less useful if it leaves no way to finish the other two. Your acquired upgrades remain for the rest of that game.
6. Finish round three
There is no market after the final round. Your accumulated round points, after letter-market costs, are the final score. Eligible signed-in Daily Challenge results can appear on Dextreme’s leaderboard; tutorials do not save results.
